What a Static Pressure Sensor Is Actually Protecting Against

Static pressure is one of the signals that tells a variable-air-volume system whether it can deliver the airflow its zones require.

Too little pressure and critical zones may struggle to reach their airflow demand.

Too much pressure and the system may pay for it through unnecessary fan energy, noise and less stable terminal control.

The important part is that demand is not constant.

As terminal dampers move, the pressure the system actually needs changes with them. A mature control strategy can therefore do more than maintain a fixed static pressure setpoint. It can reset that target based on actual system demand.

The objective is simple:

Provide enough pressure for the system to work properly, without maintaining more than it needs.

When comfort complaints appear, temperature is not always the first place worth looking.
