The operational impact is not about which protocol is used. It is about how consistently those communication rules are applied.

When protocols are open and applied consistently:

• Integration across vendors is predictable and repeatable
• Maintenance does not rely on undocumented workarounds
• Adding new systems or buildings is straightforward
• Operational flexibility is higher because the system speaks the same language everywhere

When protocols are inconsistent or applied unevenly:

• Every new integration becomes a custom project
• Data requires interpretation or manual alignment
• Troubleshooting is slower and more dependent on specialists
• Scaling across a portfolio becomes more expensive and more complex

This is one of the earliest design decisions in a building automation project, and also one of the most consequential for long-term operation, maintainability, and the ability to adapt the portfolio over time.
